Weight gain

Weight gain accompanied by an increased tendency for central fat distribution is common among women in midlife.

It is important to understand the cause and work on it and it is equally important not to stress about it.

 

Why does it happen?

​

There are many reasons -

  • Genetic factors

  • Hormonal imbalances (like hypothyroidism)

  • Lifestyle issues

  • Hormonal changes during menopause

  • Stress

  • Losing muscle mass (which causes fewer calories to be burnt )

  • Poor sleep

  • Poor gut health


It is interesting to note that, in a recent study, they found that the metabolic rate does not reduce between the ages of 20 -60 years. Hence, we cannot blame it for weight gain. 

 

Excess weight can lead to many other health issues such as 

  • Breathing problems

  • Cardiovascular issues

  • Diabetes

  • Mental health issues

  • Risk of some types of cancers.
     

With some changes, it is possible to prevent weight gain or manage the gain healthily or even possibly lose weight

 

  • Firstly, it will help if to identify the main reason for weight gain

  • Modify eating habits - e.g., eat more proteins, less sugar

  • Make exercising a routine like brushing your teeth

  • Get adequate sleep

  • Check gut health

  • Check on mental health and stress levels


So, if one starts watching their lifestyle (eating, fitness, hydration, sleep, mental health) in the 30s and do regular health checks, it is possible to manage the weight quite well through midlife.
